Barking deer
The Barking Deer (Muntiacus muntjak) is a small, secretive deer found in forests and scrublands throughout Sri Lanka. With its rich reddish-brown coat, large alert ears and, in males, short antlers, it is a charming and elusive inhabitant of the island’s wilderness. Named for its distinctive bark-like alarm call, the Barking Deer is usually seen alone or in pairs, quietly moving through the forest undergrowth in search of leaves, fruits and other vegetation.
